In 1973, Sontag observed that photography had become a widely practiced amusement much like sex and dancing – a mass medium not practiced by most people as art. In an updated mobile world everyone is a photographer and it hardly matters what activities we photograph, as long as images are taken, uploaded and liked. The tech-addled quickly crop and sharpen afterwards.
Slowly and deliberately, From Ash to Apollo honors the local and the small – the daily inventory of objects and relationships most of us are indifferent to. On the streets of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Sara Maria Salamone sees errant weeds, window tchotchkes, fencing and cars permanently parked. Amidst change she documents a grammar of sameness and stillness. Form and composition merge with domestic photographic traditions so that the gallery itself becomes an in situ family photo album.
SARA MARIA SALAMONE was born in 1983 in Albany, NY. She earned her BFA in photography from Hampshire College and her MFA in photography and related media from Parsons, The New School for Design. Salamone has curated exhibitions at Albany Center Gallery in Albany, NY and Launch F18, NYCAMs, and site95 in NYC. She lives and works in Brooklyn. This is her first time exhibiting with GCA.
